Cosmetic Tattooing FAQ / Details

The following information is important when considering Cosmetic Tattooing. Please read carefully to understand the process and outcomes of Ombre Powder Eyebrow and Lip Blush Tattooing.
Cosmetic Tattooing is a semi-permanent makeup technique that uses a specialised tattoo machine to insert pigment into the upper layers of the skin. The design, shape, colour and fullness of your Brows or Lips is discussed prior to treatment. Brows – The overall result is a soft powder effect, like what you would expect to see when using makeup to create shape and fill in the brow. The start of the brow is light with a gradual increase of shading and depth as you reach the tail. Please Note – Ombre Brow Tattooing technique varies from Microblading as it is creating a shape and shadow, opposed to simulated hair strokes. Lips – The result depends on the colour you choose. If you prefer a shade that compliments your natural lip tone then results will be more along the lines of when you apply a nude lip gloss – subtle and soft. For more dramatic shades such as deep pinks, plums and reds your result will be similar to a pigmented lip stain.

Cosmetic Tattooing is suitable for most people. However, there are a few conditions that affect your eligibility,  interfere with the tattooing procedure and or the healing process. It is not recommended to undergo this procedure if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic or undergoing chemotherapy. You should avoid tattooing if you have a heart condition, bleeding disorders, skin irritation near treat epilepsy, viral infection, disease, have had antiwrinkle/filler in the last 30 days.

The discomfort of Cosmetic Tattooing is minimal as your comfort is paramount. Topical anaesthetic is applied during the procedure to help keep you comfortable. However it is very important to recognise that everyone has a different pain threshold so please communicate any concerns about pain so we can go over our options in more detail. Other factors such as timing of menstrual cycles can increase discomfort. Certain conditions such as Fibromyalgia may affect sensitivity during and after your procedure.

Every session is different as we are designing brows that are unique to you. These are the key benchmarks that happen in every tattooing treatment you have with us:

  • We have an in depth discussion around your expectations, achievable results, shape and colour

  • The area is cleansed and sterilized with alcohol. We do precise measurement and mapping of the Eyebrows/Lips using a waterproof pencil and barrier paste.

  • Mixed pigment is applied onto the skin using a tattoo device and sterilised disposable needle. Both are specifically designed for cosmetic tattooing

  • Once the first pass on the Brows/Lips is complete, cleaning of the area and numbing gel is applied

  • We repeat the steps 3 and 4 1-2 more times until complete

  • The entire session takes no more than 3 hours from start to finish

Cosmetic Tattooing is almost always a Two-Step Process, meaning a touch up is almost always required. Generally there will be areas that haven’t taken to the pigment due to underlying skin structures such as sweat/oil glands, blood vessels and hair follicles. Pigment retention from your initial session can vary greatly on the individual and the factors mentioned below. An acceptable fade is between 10-50%. This is addressed during the touch up to ensure that your Brow or Lip Tattoo is even looking its best for as long as possible. Although it is extremely rare a third session may be required. This can be due to skin (as some are more resistant to the implantation of the pigment), lack of appropriate skincare or abnormal white blood cell count. On average, results last around 2 years. This largely depends on factors such as:

  • Skin Type such as high oil production.

  • Age and skin integrity.

  • Sun Exposure. Repeated UV exposure actively fades tattoo pigment.

  • Topical medications, such as steroids

  • Skincare with active ingredients, such as Retinoids.

  • Cosmetic procedures such as Chemical Peels and Laser

  • Lifestyle Factors which expose your skin to free radicals, such as smoking.

  • Do not work out on the day of the procedure.

  • Avoid tanning or sunburn to the face.

  • Avoid the use of Aspirin, Niacin, Vitamin E or Ibuprofen 24 hours beforehand. This can cause an increase of bleeding during the session.

  • No alcohol or caffeine on the day of the procedure.

  • No waxing or tinting 72 hours prior to your session.

  • Avoid Botox/Dysport and Fillers to the area at least 2 weeks prior.

  • No laser treatment to direct or surrounding areas 30 days before and 6 weeks after.

  • Cease use of chemical peels and skincare with active ingredients 30 days before and 4-6 weeks after. These include Fruit/Milk Acids and Retinoids  unless prescribed by a doctor.

  • FOR LIPS -If you have had previous cold sores please take anti-viral medication 48 hours prior to your treatment.

What do I do after I leave (After-Care)?

Within 24 Hours

  • Remove any excess lymph (clear fluid) with a damp cotton pad. Use medium pressure to wipe across the area. Repeat this process using the wipes provided at least 2-3 times before going to bed. This will help prevent the formation of scabs. Redness and swelling is usually minimal, and will disappear within 48 hours, or no later than 3 days.

The Next 7 Days

  • Apply your aftercare cream morning and night with a cotton tip, wiping off any old cream with a damp cotton pad before reapplying. If you have extremely oily skin you can use the cream as required.

  • Keep your tattoo dry for the next 7 days

  • No strenuous exercise, sweating or direct sunlight to the area for 7 days

  • Minimal touching and ensure that you wash your hands to avoid the transmission of bacteria to the area.

  • Do not exfoliate the area, pick at the scab or any flaking. This can lift pigment out of the deeper layers of skin.

  • No makeup near the treated area as this can transmit bacteria.

  • Cease use of chemical peels and skincare with active ingredients for 4-6 weeks These include Fruit/Milk Acids and Retinoids  unless prescribed by a doctor.

  • If you are prone to Coldsores, continue to take antivirals as per pharmacist advice. If a Coldsore does emerge, you may use topical antiviral as per pharmacist advice

  • Avoid spicy or salty food making direct contact to your lips for 3-5 days

  • Where possible, drink all liquids through a clean straw for 3-5 days

  • Use toothpaste without whitening products

(aka Emotional Rollercoaster of Cosmetic Tattooing)

Your new tattooed Eyebrows or Lips will go through several phases during the healing cycle. It is also very natural for your feelings about them to go through just as many cycles during this time. It is important to trust the process and be patient for the final results to emerge.

  • Immediately After (Day 1): The pigment will appear very sharp and dark immediately after the procedure. This is because the pigment is still sitting on top of the skin and has not settled in completely. The color of the pigment will soften gradually in the coming days and weeks. It is normal to see some pigment on the cotton swab when you are cleaning the area. This is excess pigment or bodily fluid that is naturally exiting your skin.

  • Days 2-4 – This is when your tattoo will be at their darkest and when most people have the most concern over their life choices. We can assure you that this is temporary as the skin is beginning its healing process and the pigment is at its closest to the surface.

  • Days 5-7 – Once the healing of the skin starts taking place it will look like flakes of dry skin. This might give you the impression that the color pigment is fading too quickly. However, this is just superficial color and dry skin being removed from your upper layers of the epidermis. It is very important to not exfoliate or pick at the area as this can lift some of the deeper pigment off the skin before it has properly healed. It is normal to lose colour as certain skin types/ ages can influence the skin’s ability to uptake the implanted pigment.

  • Days 8-10 – You will take a look in the mirror and perhaps wonder where your Brows or Lips went. During this time, the deeper layers of your skin (Dermis) are working to heal the tissues you can’t see. The pigmentation can look like it has disappeared due to the increased white blood cell and fibroblast production temporarily thickening the tissues in the area.

  • Days 11-28 – Once the deeper healing has been completed, an accurate representation of your pigment retention becomes apparent. Your skin has a 30 day cellular turnover which is why the touch up appointment is always scheduled 4-6 weeks after your first session.

Eyebrow Lamination

Elevate your brow game by elevating your brow hair. Lamination is like a perm or chemical straightening except for your brow hair. Once the treatment is complete we go in with a sculpt, wax and shape so every single strand is right where you want them.

While you are at it, why not add on a Hybrid Tint to polish it all off.

Please Note – A patch test minimum of 48 hours is recommended by the product manufacturer prior to your treatment. If you request a patch test, please advise so this can be organised prior to your booking date/time. If one is not performed in advance you will be asked to complete a Patch Test Waiver on the day of your appointment.

Brow Lamination with Sculpt & Wax – 1 Hour$85
Brow Lamination with Wax/Sculpt AND Tint – 1.5 Hours$115
Lash Lift and Brow Lamination Combo – Tint to ONE Area – 1 Hour 45 Mins$150
Brow Lamination and Lash Lift Combo – Tint to TWO Areas – 1 Hour 55 Mins$170

Eyebrow Lamination FAQ / Details

  • Keep your brows dry for 24 hours – Your new brow shape is still setting. Wetting during this time can cause the shape to fall out.

  • No Swimming, excessive sweating and steam for 24 hours – We already know that moisture lessens the setting effect. Heat can make your brows floppy or worse – frizzy!

  • Avoid Anti-ageing skincare and fake tan for 3 days before and after – Lamination chemicals can sensitise dry the area so keep exfoliants to a minimum. Fake tan can discolour your brow tint. Nobody wants green brows. If you do want green brows, please ask in advance.

  • Like your teeth, brush your brows daily – Your brows will hold their new shape but the odd stray can go wandering. Comb them into place and carry on with your day. Investing in a good quality brow gel or soap will keep those puppies well trained.

  • Feed your brows – Dry skin is a common side effect to your well-groomed pretties. Wait 2 days post-treatment then use a brow conditioner or oil (eg. castor or argan) on a cotton pad. Your brows will be glossy like a Labrador’s coat!

Generally your Brow Lamination will last from 4-6 weeks. Depending on the level of care as well as your natural hair growth and shedding patterns, results can be up to 8 weeks. To maintain the slick or fluffy aesthetic of your brows we recommend re-laminating within the 4-6 week window.

Eyelash Lift

Show us what your Mumma gave you. Or Dad, because we all know what boy lashes are like. Lifting is essentially a perm for your eyelashes but without the frizz. Keep it light, without the heaviness, fallout and maintenance of lash extensions by enhancing your natural assets.

If transitioning from Lash Extensions to Lifting we recommend waiting 2 weeks between removal of your extensions to attending your lifting appointment.

Eyelash Lift FAQ / Details

  • Remove your contact lenses prior to treatment.

  • Let us know if you have an eye infection or irritation of the eye area recently.

  • On the day of treatment avoid wearing make-up on or around your eye area, if possible.

A lash lift will typically last about 6-8 weeks. This depends on how well the lashes are looked after post treatment. Using Waterproof Mascara can weaken the effect of the lifting and leave a residue that is difficult to remove.

Micro-Needling FAQ / Details

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that targets a wide variety of skin concerns such as pigmentation, fine lines, enlarged pores and overall texture. It is suitable for nearly everybody. It works by creating a series of small openings in the skin’s outer layer (micro-trauma) resulting in stimulation of the body’s healing response. During this accelerated phase of cellular turnover the skin creates collagen and elastin to the area that has been addressed. Commonly treated concerns are:

  • Acne scarring

  • Uneven Texture

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Fine lines and Wrinkles

  • Enlarged Pores

  • Congestion

  • Stretch Marks

  • Rosacea

Micro-Needling is suitable for most people. However, there are a few conditions that affect your eligibility, interfere with the needling procedure and or the healing process. It is not recommended to undergo this procedure if you are pregnant, nursing, diabetic or undergoing chemotherapy. You should avoid Micro-Needling if you have a heart condition, bleeding disorders, skin irritation near the treatment area, epilepsy, viral infection, disease, have had botox/filler in the last 30 days.

We want you to remain comfortable during your treatment. Prior to the procedure you are given the option to have topical numbing cream applied to the area. After approximately 20mins the excess cream is removed and we begin during the Micro-needling procedure. If at any stage you are experiencing discomfort, additional topical anaesthetic can be applied.

There is no one size fits all treatment and everyone’s skin will react differently based on age, genetics and complexion (oily, dry etc). As part of your initial session we will have a discussion around your goals, expectations and realistic outcomes with appropriate timelines.
Generally speaking, however, most people will begin to notice an improvement of their target areas after 3 sessions with most goals reached within 4-6 sessions. The time between sessions is 4-6 weeks which is the time it takes for your skin to have completed its cellular turnover.

As mentioned previously, Micro-Needling results depend greatly on the skin concern and its severity and you as an individual. Consequently the length of which results last is subjective. Our focus on skin improvement, which can sometimes mean ongoing/periodic maintenance. Factors that influence the outcome and longevity are:

  • Skin Type such as high oil production.

  • Age and skin integrity.

  • Sun Exposure. Repeated UV exposure actively fades tattoo pigment.

  • Topical medications, such as steroids

  • Skincare with active ingredients, such as Retinoids.

  • Cosmetic procedures such as Chemical Peels and Laser

  • Lifestyle Factors which expose your skin to free radicals, such as smoking.

  • Avoid Accutane 6 months prior to treatment

  • Cease using skin care with active ingredients such a retinoids, steroids or antibiotics 5-7 days before treatment

  • Do not use anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen or Voltaren and blood thinning agents such as fish oil 72 hours prior as they can enhance bruising

  • Avoid waxing, electrolysis or shaving to the area

  • If prone to cold sores, take an antiviral agent 48 hours before treatment

  • Do not take anti-inflammatories for 7 days post treatment. Panadol is fine.

  • Refrain from using ice to the area as this can interfere with the bodies healing response

  • Minimal exposure to sunlight for 2 weeks post treatment. Wear a high SPF when you are outside

  • Avoid skincare with retinoids for 72 hours – 2 weeks depending on skin sensitivity

  • Excessive sweating and steam can dehydrate your skin. Minimise where possible for 48 hours

(aka Emotional Rollercoaster of Micro-needling)

  • Immediately After (Days 1-3) – A sunburn-like effect (redness, tightness and tenderness) is expected and normal. Cool water and gentle pressure to the area is recommended. Use only gentle/mild skincare products on your face. Look for ingredients that replace skin moisture such as Hyaluronic Acid and avoid skincare that accelerates skin turnover or resurfacing like AHA’s. Glycolic or Lactic Acids.

  • Days 3-5 – Your skin will experience dryness and flaking. This is the skins’ natural cellular turnover so avoid the urge to pick or exfoliate. Keep the area moisturised.

  • Days 5-7 – After 5-7 days you may begin to return to your normal skincare routine, provided your skin no longer feels irritated.

  • Ongoing – For best results we recommend follow up treatments to be booked every 4-6 weeks, with a series of 3-5 treatments depending on your personalised plan.

What people say

Was looking for botox brisbane to get masseters injection and slim my face. The doctor was helpful and went through in detail what to expect from the botox injections. The price was also very affordable, better than a few other quotes I got. For negatives, I ended up having to had to wait about 20 minutes before getting to see the doctor. Kind of inconvenient but the service was excellent otherwise.

Found define on the gram and went in for chin filler and anti wrinkle injections. The doctor and nurse were very friendly and gave upfront advice (said no to thread lifts, didn't think they would work on me). The Dysport I had was great, kicked in day 3. The chin filler looks really natural and really balances my face.

I have worked along side Dr Josh and the lovely RN Nancy and Nina. I have never met anyone that was so loving towards their clients. I used to run a similar business in Brisbane and we would help each other when it comes to new techniques so that our clients would get the best outcome possible. Yes we do care THAT MUCH! I have now relocated in Sydney and I am sending all my Brisbane clients to the Define dream team as I know they could not be better looked after. Lots of love to you all guys! So humble and giving!
